FOOD SAFETY ALERT: A Salmonella outbreak linked to imported cantaloupe has officially ended after sickening at least 70 people across 25 states, according to the CDC.
The outbreak was traced to cantaloupe imported from Guatemala by Ayco Farms Inc. of Pompano Beach. Federal investigators say the contaminated fruit is no longer on the market, and there is currently no recommendation to avoid cantaloupe in general.
The FDA has since placed two foreign suppliers connected to the outbreak on import alert, preventing future shipments from entering the U.S. until safety concerns are addressed.
Health officials say the real number of illnesses may have been much higher, as many Salmonella cases go unreported.
