With South Florida’s strong cruise culture and growing summer travel season, health officials are urging residents to stay informed after a rare hantavirus outbreak linked to an international cruise ship sickened several passengers.
According to the Florida Department of Health, hantavirus pulmonary syndrome can begin with flu-like symptoms before becoming severe and affecting the lungs. The virus is most commonly linked to exposure to infected rodent droppings, urine, or saliva.
Officials say the overall public risk remains low but encourage travelers experiencing symptoms after recent travel to seek medical attention.
