Nearly 1,000 Behavioral Health Professionals Gather for Annual South Florida Conference
In a vibrant assembly at The Diplomat Beach Resort in Hollywood, nearly 1,000 clinicians, educators, policymakers, and community leaders from across Florida united for the 11th Annual South Florida Behavioral Health Conference: The Power of Prevention. Hosted by United Way Broward’s Coalition on Behavioral Health & Drug Prevention in partnership with the Broward Behavioral Health Coalition (BBHC) and the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF), the event marked a pivotal moment for mental health advocacy and innovation.
Held over two days in May during Mental Health Awareness Month, the conference aimed to explore cutting-edge strategies in prevention, treatment, recovery, and mental wellness. Attendees had the opportunity to learn from nationally recognized keynote speakers like Kevin Hines, a globally renowned suicide prevention advocate, and Ryan Jenkins, a leadership futurist and bestselling author. The conference also featured workshops and sessions that addressed significant topics such as trauma-informed care, suicide prevention, and workforce development.
Kathleen Cannon, President & CEO of United Way Broward, emphasized the significance of the event, stating, “The Power of Prevention is more than this year’s theme; it is a reminder that investing in prevention, early intervention, and community support creates healthier outcomes for individuals, families, and communities.”
The conference highlighted the achievements of several leaders in the field. Heather Geronemus, Vice President at UKG, received the Paul E. Daly Champion for Prevention Award; David Scharf from the Broward Sheriff’s Office was honored with the Community Trailblazer Award; and Silvia Quintana, CEO of BBHC, received the Legacy of Care Award.
Participants were also reminded of the wealth of resources available for those in need. Residents can access free behavioral health services, substance use prevention, crisis intervention, and recovery support by dialing 211 for community-based services or 988 for immediate mental health crisis assistance.
The conference, enriched by the engagement of professionals dedicated to strengthening South Florida’s behavioral health system, underscores the region’s commitment to fostering community wellness.
