Students who want to pursue a career as a firefighter can sign up for the fire academy at Blanche Ely High School. The curriculum is taught by City of Pompano Beach firefighters. The academy focuses on real-world training, hazardous material management, fire suppression, incident command systems, and rescue operations.

The class will include hands-on simulations, classroom instruction, and mentorship from experienced firefighters. Students who graduate will leave with a Level 1 state certification and then can enroll with the city’s academy for the Level 2 certification required to be a firefighter in the state of Florida, according to Chad Brocato, Chief of Pompano Beach Fire Rescue.

“It gives them a sense of community,” said Blanche Ely Principal Tavures Williams in a video on the school board’s website. “Having the opportunity to get to learn from instructors that are actually in the field doing the real work will get the kids excited.”

Zayvean Fulmore, a student at Blanche Ely is enrolled in the program, “this is going to help me learn more about being a firefighter and how to save people.”
