Broward County Unites to Tackle Waste Crisis with Historic Master Plan
In a groundbreaking effort, 28 cities across Broward County have come together for the first time to address the escalating waste crisis through a unified Master Plan. This initiative, led by the Solid Waste Authority of Broward County (SWA), marks a pivotal moment in the region’s history as local leaders aim to manage garbage more sustainably.
The Governing Board of the SWA approved the 40-year Solid Waste Management and Recycling Master Plan on April 17, 2026. This decision kicks off a critical 120-day period for Broward’s municipalities and the County to cast their votes on whether to implement this comprehensive strategy.
“This is a once-in-a-generation chance to solve Broward’s trash crisis,” said Mike Ryan, Chair of the SWA’s Executive Committee and Governing Board and Mayor of the City of Sunrise. He emphasized the importance of collective action, stating, “One city can’t solve this alone.”
As Broward County generates over five million tons of trash annually, the urgency is palpable. The landfill and waste-to-energy facilities are nearing capacity, and the county’s recycling rate lags at 38%, far below the state’s goal of 75%. The Master Plan aims to tackle these challenges by enhancing recycling efforts, recovering valuable materials, and reducing dependency on landfilling and incineration through innovative waste management strategies.
The plan promises financial benefits by leveraging combined trash tonnage for better pricing and long-term cost stability. Ryan stressed the economic implications, saying, “By sticking together, we can keep the cost to responsibly manage our trash as low as possible for our residents and businesses.”
Momentum is already building. On April 23, 2026, Coconut Creek, the Village of Sea Ranch Lakes, and Southwest Ranches voted unanimously to support the plan. Each city retains control of its waste services and holds a seat on the SWA’s Governing Board, ensuring local interests are represented.
Residents eager to contribute can view the voting schedule for their city commission and pledge to reduce waste and recycle properly at www.browardrecycles.org. This collective effort aims to transform Broward County’s waste management system and secure a sustainable future for all its communities.
