Broward Health’s Desk to Docs Mentorship Program Bridges the Gap for Aspiring Local Physicians
In a lively gathering at the Broward Health Medical Center, high school students from Broward County met their physician mentors face-to-face for the first time through the Desk to Docs mentorship program. The event, hosted by the Broward Health Office of Graduate Medical Education (GME), marked the program’s second in-person session, filled with engagement, inspiration, and practical medical simulations.
“Mentorship is one of the most powerful tools we have in medicine,” said Dr. Patricia Rowe-King, Broward Health’s designated institutional official. Her words resonated as resident doctors connected with students, offering guidance on the journey to donning the white coat.
In its fifth year, Desk to Docs has transitioned from being exclusively online to an in-person experience. This initiative pairs high school students interested in STEM and healthcare careers with medical residents, providing invaluable insights into the path to becoming a physician. This year, 39 mentor-mentee pairs participated, representing schools such as American Heritage School, Blanche Ely High School, and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, among others.
The evening kicked off with a bingo icebreaker, encouraging interaction and camaraderie. Dr. Rowe-King then delivered motivational remarks before students engaged in hands-on learning in the state-of-the-art training simulation lab. Here, they worked with high-fidelity medical mannequins, simulating real-life medical emergencies in a risk-free setting.
The event was attended by members of the CTACE Advisory Board of Broward County Public Schools and proud parents who observed their children immerse themselves in the medical training environment.
Amanda Eukovich, a third-year internal medicine resident, expressed the impact of the program: “As residents, it’s incredibly rewarding to offer guidance, share our experiences, and help make a career in medicine feel more attainable.”
Broward Health remains committed to its mission of providing exceptional care and fostering future medical professionals. This program not only inspires young minds but also strengthens the community by making healthcare careers accessible to students from diverse backgrounds.
