POMPANO BEACH MAN ARRESTED ON SECOND-DEGREE MURDER

A 34-year-old man has been arrested for second degree-murder after fatally shooting his roommate in Pompano Beach. Detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Homicide unit are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.

At approximately 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 10, BSO deputies and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responded to a shooting call near the 1300 block of Northeast Fourth Street. When emergency crews arrived, they made contact with 34-year-old Jeramie Smith and 46-year-old Paul Rivera. 

According to investigators, Rivera was pronounced deceased on scene by paramedics after sustaining a gunshot wound. Detectives say the preliminary investigation revealed Smith shot Rivera.

BSO Crime Scene and Homicide detectives responded to investigate. A representative with the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office was also notified and responded to the scene. 

During the on-scene investigation, Smith was immediately detained. A warrant for his arrest was also obtained, and he was formally taken into custody and transported to BSO Main Jail. He faces one count of second-degree murder with a firearm. 

The investigation continues.
