COVID-19 has changed our way of life, especially our approach to school and education. As we adjust to a new level of normal, Broward County Public Schools is working on the best way to educate students in the latest semester. The new education plan entitled the Spring Intervention Plan is effective January 11 and ensures that schools will remain open for at least five days a week for students to receive educational services. Students who are receiving failing grades with the virtual school option will be required to attend in-person classes. The school district will also provide monthly progress reports to ensure children are learning on schedule.
Some components of the Spring Intervention Plan include:
– A focus on closing achievement gaps, particularly those that have been exacerbated during the pandemic. The district intends to implement instructional time, including after school, and weekends/or summer programs to make for lost time. This will be achieved through in-person programs, collaborating with families, providing services to students with designated needs, and offering Winter Break Learning Campus to students.
– Target outreach for students whose performance in reading and mathematics seems to be declining.
– Identify VPK and Kindergarten eligible students with the goal of engaging students to maximize kindergarten readiness to support long-term achievement.
– Innovative professional development opportunities for teachers, including self-paced Canvas courses to learn about technology integration.
