Young people across Broward County will have additional opportunities to explore career paths, develop workplace skills and prepare for life after graduation through a $25,000 grant from Comcast to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County.

The funding will support the nonprofit organization’s Big Futures initiative, which connects students and young adults with mentors, working professionals and hands-on educational experiences designed to help them make informed decisions about their futures.

Comcast announced the contribution on October 20, highlighting a longstanding relationship with the Broward County mentoring organization. The investment comes as Big Brothers Big Sisters continues expanding programs that introduce young people to college, career training and opportunities in the workforce.

A $25,000 Investment in Broward County’s Future

According to Comcast, the grant will help cover several components of Big Futures, including career-readiness workshops, learning materials, mentoring sessions and transportation to workplace experiences.

Transportation support is particularly relevant to a program that introduces participants to businesses and professional environments outside their regular classrooms. The funding is part of Comcast’s Project UP initiative, which supports digital access, education and economic opportunities in communities across the country.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County President and CEO Malena Mendez welcomed the investment, describing Comcast as a longtime partner in the organization’s efforts to support local youth. In the October announcement, Mendez emphasized that the new funding would help more participants gain practical experience and prepare for college and employment.

The organizations have not released a specific number of additional students who will be served through this particular grant.

Big Futures Helps Students Prepare for Life After High School

Big Futures focuses on helping young people navigate the transition from school to adulthood. While traditional youth mentoring often emphasizes personal development and academic support, the program also introduces participants to practical decisions involving education, career interests and financial independence.

Through different programs within Big Futures, participants can receive guidance on pursuing college degrees, entering trade programs or preparing to join the workforce. The initiative offers opportunities to explore different industries, meet working professionals and learn what employers expect from prospective employees. Program activities include résumé writing, interview preparation, professional communication, financial literacy and goal setting.

For students who have had limited exposure to different career fields, these experiences can provide an opportunity to ask questions, explore interests and consider professional pathways they may not have previously encountered. The program also connects participants with adult mentors who offer guidance as young people make educational and career decisions.

Program Participation Has Expanded Since 2022

Big Futures has experienced significant growth since its launch. According to Comcast’s announcement, participation increased from 98 young people when the program began in June 2022 to 344 participants.

That growth represents an expansion in the number of young people taking part in the initiative, although Comcast did not specify how many of the 344 participants would directly benefit from the newly announced funding. The organization conducts mentoring and career-readiness activities at community, nonprofit and corporate partner locations.

These sessions are designed to connect what students learn in educational settings with real-world expectations. For example, a visit to a workplace may help students understand how employees collaborate, how different departments operate and what skills are needed for particular positions.

Other experiences may involve conversations with professionals about their career journeys, educational backgrounds and everyday responsibilities. Such opportunities allow participants to explore possible futures before committing to a college major, training program or career field.

Mentorship Remains at the Center of the Program

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County has spent more than five decades connecting young people with adult mentors. Its mentoring model focuses on building relationships that provide encouragement, guidance and consistent support.

Through Big Futures, that approach extends into college and career planning. Mentors can help young people identify their strengths, develop goals and think through decisions about education and employment.

The organization’s broader Big Futures network includes school-to-work mentoring, college and career readiness programming, postsecondary workforce development and scholarship opportunities. Together, these programs are intended to provide a range of options for young people with different educational interests and career ambitions. Rather than directing every student toward the same path, the initiative introduces multiple possibilities, including college, trades and employment.

Comcast and Big Brothers Big Sisters Continue Their Partnership

Comcast and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County have worked together for more than a decade on youth mentoring and community initiatives. Dawn Stagliano, Comcast’s Florida Region director of government affairs, has served on the nonprofit’s board for more than 15 years.

The organization recently recognized her with its Legacy Award for her involvement in fundraising and community support. The latest $25,000 contribution continues that relationship while directing resources toward opportunities that can help participants build career-related skills.

For Broward County families, the grant underscores the role local employers and nonprofit organizations can play in connecting young people with mentors and educational resources. However, the contribution’s longer-term results, including how many additional participants will receive services, remain to be determined.
