Broward Health Back-to-School Events Serve More Than 1,000 Children and Families

FORT LAUDERDALE — More than 1,000 Broward County children and family members received school supplies, uniforms, immunizations and other resources during two back-to-school events hosted by Broward Health affiliates.

Broward HealthPoint hosted its annual Back to School Jamboree at the Cora E. Braynon Care Center in Fort Lauderdale, drawing more than 600 children and family members.

Nearly 100 children received school-required immunizations, while organizers distributed 400 backpacks filled with school supplies and served 760 hot meals. Families also had access to health services, educational resources and support from 10 community partners and more than 100 volunteers.

Children’s Diagnostic & Treatment Center (CDTC) focused on families of children with special healthcare needs during its annual Back to School Resource Fair.

The event provided 400 children and their siblings with free school uniforms, backpacks and supplies along with information about community resources.

Families also received water safety and drowning prevention education from the Florida Department of Health. Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue and Fort Lauderdale Police assisted with distributing supplies and uniforms. Stanley C. Panther, the Florida Panthers mascot, made an appearance, and activities included face painting and a photo booth.

“Preparing children for a successful school year begins with ensuring they are healthy and have the resources they need to thrive,” said Melida Akiti, corporate transformation executive at Broward Health. “With these events, we are removing barriers to care, supporting families and strengthening the health of our community.”
