Arc Broward Expands Eastward with New Academy of Arts & Recreation

In Oakland Park, a new opportunity is blossoming for teens and young adults with disabilities. The recently launched Academy of Arts & Recreation (AAR) by Arc Broward is providing a creative space for individuals aged 16 to 26 to explore their interests in the arts while building essential social and job readiness skills. This initiative addresses the pressing need for resources on the east side of Broward County.

The AAR offers a community-based recreational program designed to foster independence and a sense of belonging among participants. Jennifer Saint Louis, Ph.D., vice president of workforce services at Arc Broward, emphasized the transformative potential of the academy, stating, “The Academy of Arts & Recreation is redefining what prevocational services can and should be.” She highlighted the gap in meaningful opportunities for growth that the AAR aims to fill by integrating arts, recreation, volunteerism, and real-world experiences.

Classes at AAR run from Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., featuring a blend of recreational and wellness activities, community-based learning, and volunteer opportunities. With a supportive 1:10 staff-to-participant ratio, individualized plans are crafted to meet the specific goals and needs of each participant, helping them develop real-world employability and daily living skills.

Saint Louis further described AAR as “a bridge between potential and possibility,” where participants can discover their strengths and build a future rich with purpose and connection.
