Pompano Beach Commission Meeting Highlights: July 2025

The Pompano Beach City Commission met on July 22, 2025, at City Hall. Here are the key updates and decisions residents should know: 

Community Heroes Honored 

The 2025 Nick Creola “Heroes in the Community Awards” were presented to Gwen Leys and Donald K. Farrington Sr. for their outstanding contributions to Pompano Beach. 

Farrington served as an Assistant coach for the Pompano Cowboys youth football team for more than a decade in the 1990s. He offered food, clothing and other supplies to support the young players.

“Mr. Farrington stands out because he was more than a coach, he became a mentor, father figure, and big brother to so many, countless young men’s lives,” said Rafael Katz, Vice Chair of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee.

Florida Water Professionals Month Proclaimed 

Mayor Rex Hardin declared August 2025 as Florida Water Professionals Month, recognizing the essential work of water and utility staff in keeping the city’s infrastructure running safely. 

Wastewater Repairs Funded 

The commission ratified an emergency contract of $308,544 with DBF Construction to repair a wastewater main. City staff emphasized the urgent need to prevent service disruptions. 

Holiday Lighting Contract Approved 

The city renewed its holiday décor contract with The Christmas Palace, LLC for $194,655.75, ensuring festive decorations will return across Pompano Beach during the winter season. 

Grant Supports Community Action Support Team 

The Florida Department of Health awarded the city a $349,000 grant to continue funding its Community Action Support Team (CAST) program, which connects residents with health and social support services. 

Police Department Study Moves Forward 

Commissioners approved a $270,000 study to compare the city’s current law enforcement contract with the Broward Sheriff’s Office against the option of creating a standalone Pompano Beach Police Department. 

Fire Rescue Assessment Set for 2026 

The commission established the 2026 fire rescue assessment, projecting $33.9 million in revenues to support fire rescue services, facilities, and programs across the city. 

Community Bus Service Renewed 

A new contract with Limousines of South Florida, Inc. will continue providing community bus service. The agreement totals $700,000, reimbursed through Broward County surtax funds. 

HVAC Service Agreements Approved 

Two HVAC contracts were approved to maintain city facilities: A-Excellent Service, Inc. (up to $250,000 annually) and Flo-Tech Mechanical, LLC (up to $100,000 annually). 

Appointments to City Boards 

  • Sand and Spurs Advisory Board: A new member was appointed to replace Amy Varo-Haub. 
  • Police & Firefighters’ Retirement System Board: Sharra Aaronian was reappointed for a three-year term expiring in 2028. 

Commission Schedule Changes 

The commission will reschedule its November 11, 2025 meeting and cancel its November 25 and December 23 meetings due to the holiday season.
