Broward Health Celebrates Largest Incoming Class at Annual White Coat Ceremony

On June 26, the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina became a beacon of hope and new beginnings as Broward Health welcomed its largest-ever class of graduate medical education residents and fellows. The annual White Coat Ceremony marked an emotional milestone for 141 new doctors stepping into the forefront of healthcare in South Florida.

This ceremony is more than just a tradition; it’s a symbol of dedication and the start of a journey for many aspiring healthcare professionals. With this year’s class, Broward Health’s residency and fellowship programs will expand to 388 participants across a diverse array of disciplines, including cardiovascular, pediatrics, and emergency medicine. Notably, Broward Health North now offers new residency opportunities in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Pharmacy for the first time.

The event was graced with speeches from Broward Health leaders and program directors. However, the highlight was the ceremonial “white coating,” a rite of passage signifying the official start of clinical training for the incoming residents and fellows.

Among the new residents is Dr. Annabelle Menendez, who shared a touching moment with her sister, Dr. Katherine Menendez. Katherine, completing her own Family Medicine residency, bestowed the white coat upon Annabelle. This family tradition in medicine continues, following in their father’s footsteps as a Family Medicine physician in Miami.

Another inspiring story is that of Dr. Krista Gaie Grant, who turned a personal challenge into a mission of compassion. After experiencing hair loss in college, she taught herself to make wigs. Her experience shadowing an oncologist inspired her to provide wigs for children undergoing medical treatments. Through her organization, Wigs by Krista, she continues to bring comfort to those facing health challenges.

The ceremony not only highlights the achievements and aspirations of these new medical professionals but also strengthens the local healthcare landscape, promising comprehensive care for communities across South Florida.

As Broward Health looks forward to integrating this new wave of talent, the community can expect enhanced healthcare services and innovative medical training shaping the future of patient care.
