Ten Broward County families are moving closer to the goal of homeownership as Habitat for Humanity of Broward develops Moss Estates, a new affordable housing community in Oakland Park.
The development, located at 1931 NW 27th Street, will consist of 10 homes designed to give participating families an opportunity to purchase a home and establish long-term stability. Habitat Broward celebrated the project’s groundbreaking on September 3, 2026. Construction activities moved forward Friday, October 23, as volunteers and future homeowners participated in the Seminole Hard Rock Women Build initiative.
The project represents a partnership among Habitat Broward, community donors, corporate sponsors and the families who will eventually own the homes.
A $1 Million Gift Helps Build the Community
A major contribution to Moss Estates comes from Bob and Sandra Moss, whose family donated $1 million to support the development. Bob Moss is the chairman and founder of Moss Construction, a South Florida-based construction company.
Publix Super Markets Charities has also contributed $300,000 toward the project, joining other organizations supporting Habitat Broward’s affordable homeownership mission. The funding helps advance a community intended to offer qualifying families an alternative path to owning a home. The project is named Moss Estates in recognition of the family’s contribution.
For Families, Homeownership Means Stability
Among the future homeowners is TaShierra Richardson, who has spoken about the importance of finding a permanent home for herself and her son. At the September groundbreaking, Richardson described the location’s personal significance, including its proximity to her church and workplace.
She told organizers, “I literally prayed to be in this lot.” Richardson also described the prospect of homeownership as an opportunity to provide stability for her son and something lasting for his future. Her experience illustrates the personal significance of a project that goes beyond constructing buildings. For the participating families, homeownership can create an opportunity to establish roots in their community and build a more secure foundation for the years ahead.

Volunteers Help Turn Plans Into Homes
The Moss Estates property is also hosting Habitat Broward’s 2026 Seminole Hard Rock Women Build, scheduled for October 23–24. The event brings together volunteers, sponsors and future homeowners to participate in construction and support the organization’s homeownership efforts. According to WSVN’s October 23 coverage, approximately 150 volunteers joined the construction effort, with future homeowners working alongside them. The initiative is supported by Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood and numerous community partners. Participants help with construction-related tasks as work progresses on the new neighborhood.
How Habitat Broward’s Homeownership Program Works
Habitat for Humanity of Broward works with eligible families who may face barriers to conventional home financing. Rather than simply receiving a house, participating families work toward purchasing their homes through Habitat’s affordable homeownership program.
Future homeowners contribute volunteer work, participate in homeownership preparation and take an active role in building their communities. The approach is intended to help families prepare for the responsibilities of owning and maintaining a home. Habitat Broward has developed affordable housing communities across Broward County, including projects in Pompano Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Coral Springs and North Lauderdale. Moss Estates will expand that work into another Oakland Park neighborhood.
What Happens Next?
Construction will continue as volunteers, sponsors and future homeowners work toward completing the 10-home development. Habitat Broward’s current community webpage lists an expected completion in 2027, although an earlier project announcement projected January 2028. The organization has not presented a consistent completion date across those materials.
Residents interested in supporting the development, learning about homeownership opportunities or volunteering can visit Habitat for Humanity of Broward. For 10 participating Broward families, Moss Estates represents an opportunity to work toward something that can shape their future: a home of their own.
Villij News will continue following Moss Estates and other efforts expanding affordable homeownership opportunities for families across Broward County.
