“It’s Not the Time to Throw Up Our Hands, But to Roll Up Our Sleeves,” says VP Harris

Pompano Beach, FL – The heavy weight of despair and loss was thick in the morning air when the sun rose on Wednesday, November 6, and Pompano Beach Democratic voters experienced a wide range of emotions. Many were eager to turn the page on four tumultuous years stemming from a divisive and controversial presidency. Many were hoping not to be forced to endure four more, but rather close that book for good.
Following the devastating loss, Michelle and Barack Obama released a statement on social media: “Living in a democracy is about recognizing that our point of view won’t always win out, and being willing to accept the peaceful transfer of power.”
But many Americans are angry. Questions circulated on social media, and many wondered how a convicted felon can hold our nation’s highest office, yet people who’ve been convicted of a serious crime can barely get a basic job. Many want to know how could someone with 34 felony convictions not be held accountable for any of them, yet Americans are?
Senator Bernie Sanders offered some insight into the 2024 election loss in a statement on social media. He said, “It should come as no great surprise that a Democratic Party which has abandoned working class people would find that the working-class people has abandoned them.”
The dream of ushering a Madame President into the White House, who happens to be a woman of color, was crushed. People genuinely believe that our country has failed us. The American people were warned and have now enabled a tyrannical, authoritarian unstable man to have control of our nuclear codes. Although our democratic system was designed with a governing system of checks and balances; Trump will undoubtably seek unchecked power. It had already begun when the Supreme Court granted him immunity for actions taken during his term in office.
But even in her concession speech, Harris spoke as a president should, with dignity and class, offering Americans a message of hope and a speck of light during a dark day.
“The light of America’s promise will always burn bright as long as we never give up and as long as we keep fighting. In our nation, we owe loyalty not to a president or a party, but to the Constitution of the United States, and loyalty to our conscience and God. My allegiance to all three is why I am here to say, while I concede this election, I do not concede the fight that fueled this campaign – the fight for freedom, for opportunity, for fairness, and the dignity of all people. A fight for the ideals at the heart of our nation… That is a fight I will never give up.”
While the president-elect will surely focus on revenge politics, Pompano Democrats should instead focus on preparing to fight back. The dream of a woman of color serving as President of the United States is not dead and gone. Harris has opened the door for hearts and minds to change.
She said, “I know many people feel we are entering a dark time, but for the benefit of us all, I hope that is not the case. But here’s the thing, America, if it is, let us fill the sky with the light of a brilliant billion of stars. The light of optimism, of faith, of truth of service. And may the work guide us even in the face of setbacks toward the extraordinary promise of the United States of America.”
