Hello, in this month’s edition of Villij Sports we’ll review the latest happenings in heavyweight boxing, NFL regular season, NBA preseason, MLB playoffs, WNBA finals, and the new Villij News NFL Power Rankings. Hope you guys enjoy your read.
This fall season has brought about a nice change to weather, but also some great sports action after being in the dog days of summer, where we only pretty much had baseball. We’ve been welcomed back to a variety of sports.
In heavyweight boxing, we were treated to an amazing championship fight between “The Bronze Bomber” Deontay Wilder and Champion Tyson Fury – the third of their trilogy. It was an action-packed fight to say the least with five knockdowns happening. Wilder was first knocked down in the third round. Fury was dropped twice in the fourth round by a tenacious Wilder effort, before Wilder was dropped again in the tenth round. Wilder was sent for his final harrowing outer body experience in an 11th round K.O. Fury retained the title in epic fashion.
In the NBA, teams have finished training camp and preseason ball games are being played around the country, with the Lakers and Bucks being tabbed as Finals favorites. The Lakers added perennial All NBA guard Russell Westbrook to team with Lebron James and Anthony Davis, and the Bucks returning their roster. The Warriors are being touted as a team that could potentially challenge the Lakers this season with a deep roster that has a nice blend of pedigree and youth, as well as the expected return of Klay Thompson around Christmas to add to their blend. The Brooklyn Nets are expected to challenge the Bucks in the East, potentially without Kyrie Irving, who is not complying with New York mandates of being vaccinated. The Nets banned Irving from all team activities and exercises until he gets the COVID-19 vaccination.
In the WNBA, it’s finals time and the Chicago Sky currently are up on the Phoenix Mercury 2-1 after a score of 86-50 Chicago. It was the largest finals point differential to date in WNBA history.
In the MLB, it’s almost time for the fall classic. Right now, we’re in the respective Championship Series for American League and National League. The American League participants in this year’s Championship game are the Boston Red Sox and the Houston Astros, with the Astros currently holding a 1-0 edge after a win over Houston 5-4. Game two is scheduled to be played Saturday, Oct. 23 at 4 p.m.
In the MLB it’s almost time for the fall classic. Right now, we’re in the respective Championship Series for American League and National League. The AL participants in this year’s Championship game are the Boston Red Sox and the Houston Astros, with the Astros currently holding a 3-2 edge after a Houston win 9-1.
The National League best of seven series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Atlanta Braves is a rematch reminiscent of last years. The Atlanta Braves walked off with a win in the bottom of ninth in games one and two, and the Dodgers rallied in the eighth inning of game three with a big three-run jack from Cody Bellinger to bring the series to 2-1 Atlanta with game 4 scheduled.
In the NFL, the first quarter of the season has concluded with only one team The Arizona remaining undefeated at 6-0. The Dallas Cowboys have rung off five straight wins to get to 5-1 on the season and are at a surprising 5-1 against the spread after nearly taking down the defending champion Tampa Bay Bucs in the first game of the season. The standings in the NFC have the Cowboys at 5-1, Cardinals 6-0, Packers at 5-1, and Bucs at 5-1 as division leaders. In the AFC, the Buffalo Bills stand at 4-2, LA Chargers at 4-2, and Baltimore Ravens are at 5-1, leading their respective divisions with the Tennessee Titans leading their division at 4-2. Other news in the NFL has Jon Gruden resigning from his position as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders after coming under scrutiny from emails that surfaced ten years ago and referencing NFLPA head Demaurice Smith as “Dumbmaurice” and saying that he “has lips the size of Michelin tires” as well as addressing NFL commissioner Roger Goodell by misogynistic and homophonic language in those emails as well. Rich Bisaccia long time NFL special teams coach has gained the interim head coach title in Vegas.
