DEERFIELD BEACH, FL — Broward Sheriff Dr. Gregory Tony is publicly siding with public safety unions after their vote of no confidence in Deerfield Beach City Manager Rodney Brimlow, escalating tensions over ongoing budget negotiations.

In a statement released August 14, Tony said the unions’ action reflected “deep concerns” about how the city has handled funding for Broward Sheriff’s Office personnel. “Their collective action reflects deep concerns regarding the handling of critical budget negotiations that directly impact the safety and well-being of Broward Sheriff’s Office personnel and the residents and visitors we serve in Deerfield Beach,” Tony said.

At issue are salary and staffing concerns. Sheriff Tony noted that deputies and civilian staff “work tirelessly under difficult and sometimes dangerous conditions” and deserve competitive pay aligned with industry standards. According to Tony, one BSO proposal could have saved the city roughly $900,000. Instead, he said, “misinformation, false information or incomplete information” from the city manager to commissioners has left both staff and residents with “an unacceptable level of uncertainty.”

The unions’ letter of no confidence signals rare public discontent, underscoring a strained relationship between city management and law enforcement during high-stakes budget talks.

Sheriff Tony urged city leadership to reset course. “I encourage city leadership to listen to the voices of our public servants and work toward a resolution that prioritizes safety, fairness and transparency,” he said.
