WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senator Ashley Moody is urging swift legislative action following recent violent incidents targeting law enforcement officers, including a Port St. Lucie police officer shot in the line of duty and two National Guard members attacked near the White House last week.
In her address to the Senate, Moody highlighted a troubling rise in assaults against federal officers, citing a staggering 1153% increase in attacks on ICE agents compared to the previous year. She emphasized the urgent need for protective measures, advocating for her proposed legislation, the Halo Act, designed to safeguard officers enforcing federal immigration laws.
“Last week, two of our country’s finest were ambushed just blocks from the White House,” Moody said. “These young National Guardsmen were serving their country, ensuring our safety, when they fell victim to a gunman.”
Moody described the attacks as part of a disturbing trend where law enforcement officers across the nation are increasingly targeted. “An attack on those who enforce the nation’s laws is an attack on what this country was built on,” she said, stressing the importance of standing against such violence.
The senator also referenced a range of violent acts federal officers have faced over the past 10 months, from physical assaults during arrests to more severe attacks involving firearms and Molotov cocktails.
Moody expressed optimism about her proposed Halo Act, noting growing support among her colleagues. “I’m proud to say that this week, more of my colleagues have signed up to cosponsor this legislation. They’ve said, ‘No more,’” she added.
