Pompano Beach, FL — September 3, 2025 — The City of Pompano Beach marked a major milestone with the dedication of its new Fire Station 52 at 10 NW 27 Avenue, a state-of-the-art facility built through the GO Pompano! bond program. More than just a new firehouse, the station was dedicated to Woodrow “Woody” Poitier, the city’s first African American firefighter and a trailblazer in public service.

Poitier served Pompano Beach for 24 years as a firefighter and paramedic, rising to lieutenant and earning recognition as Firefighter of the Year in 1986. He later represented the Northwest community as District 4 Commissioner for more than six years, advocating for equity and resources. Beyond his official roles, Poitier has long been known as a mentor, funeral director, and community activist.
“In a milestone celebration of diversity and service, Fire Station #52 has been proudly named after Woody Poitier, a trailblazing firefighter who broke barriers as the first Black firefighter in the City of Pompano Beach,” said current District 4 Commissioner Beverly Perkins in a Facebook post.
The 16,145-square-foot facility reflects resilience and modern design, featuring hurricane-proof construction, sustainable green features, and updated living spaces for firefighters.
