Hillsboro Inlet Park will soon have a public swimming area for recreation and marine research. The public swimming area was unanimously voted for by the commission in February. Boats and motorized vehicles will not be allowed in a .5-acre section at the park to make way for environmental restoration. The section will have mangrove plants and other marine species.
“Mangroves are a vital component of the estuarine environment in South Florida and have a significant ecological role providing nursery grounds for a number of federally managed marine and estuarine species, which are vital to commercial fishery values,” wrote Anthony Alhashemi, an employee in the city’s engineering division, in a memo to the Pompano Beach commission.
The swimming area will also have an artificial reef area for snorkelers.
