In Broward County, Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn is taking bold steps to reshape local education with a series of proposed school boundary changes. These recommendations, which could transform school landscapes, aim to address evolving community needs.
Dr. Hepburn’s proposal is the result of a thorough process involving staff analysis, community feedback, and advisory committee reviews. The changes, set for 2026–27, include school consolidations, boundary adjustments, and campus reconfigurations designed to optimize resource use and support educational programs.
Key changes include the consolidation of several elementary schools, such as Sunshine Elementary merging with Fairway Elementary, and Panther Run Elementary combining with Chapel Trail and Silver Palms Elementary. Thurgood Marshall Elementary is set to become an early learning center, focusing on birth-through-age-5 education.
Middle school adjustments involve the consolidation of Plantation Middle into Plantation High, creating a grades 6–12 campus, and merging Bair Middle with Westpine Middle. Additionally, high school boundary shifts will affect areas like Hallandale High School, which will transition to a four-day-week magnet program.
Alternative education is also being addressed, with Seagull Alternative High School proposed to merge into Whiddon-Rogers Education Center.
The School Board will consider these recommendations on January 21, 2026, potentially approving, amending, or rejecting them. If enacted, these changes could significantly impact families and students across Broward County.
