Local Neurosurgeon Transforms Life of Pompano Beach Resident

Pompano Beach resident Barry Meltz, 75, experienced a dramatic turnaround in his health thanks to the expertise of Dr. Shaye Moskowitz, a neurosurgeon at Broward Health North. This life-changing event unfolded when Meltz, a resident of John Knox Village, was diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a condition often mistaken for dementia.

Meltz, a childhood polio survivor, was active and enjoyed a full life until he suddenly found himself in a wheelchair, struggling with both physical and cognitive challenges. “I was a mess,” said Meltz. His aide, noticing the rapid decline, called 911, leading to his admission to Broward Health North.

Dr. Moskowitz discovered a buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in Meltz’s brain, which led to the diagnosis of NPH. This condition, characterized by symptoms such as balance issues and memory loss, is frequently misdiagnosed as age-related cognitive decline. Public awareness of NPH increased recently when singer Billy Joel shared his own diagnosis.

“Once we confirmed the diagnosis, I recommended placing a small ventricular shunt to relieve the pressure,” said Dr. Moskowitz. The procedure was successful, and Meltz began to recover quickly. “It was like seeing a new person,” said Doreen, Meltz’s aide.

Meltz now uses a walker for stability due to muscle weakness from polio but has returned to activities he loves, including working out, cooking, and playing Mahjong. “I’m living life again,” he said.

Reflecting on the serendipitous events, Meltz said, “Whether it was fate or chance, I feel like someone was looking out for me.” Dr. Moskowitz emphasized the importance of accurate diagnosis, stating, “Barry’s recovery reminds us that aging doesn’t always mean decline.”

Meltz is now committed to raising awareness about NPH, sharing his story and Dr. Moskowitz’s business cards with others. “He gave me my life back,” he said.
