Margate, Fla. — Dec. 11, 2025 — A Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy is recovering after being shot during an active investigation Thursday afternoon in Margate, an incident authorities say could have been fatal if not for the deputy’s ballistic vest.
The shooting occurred around 2:28 p.m. near the 6100 block of Northwest Second Street. According to investigators, the incident began earlier that day at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino, within the Seminole Police Department’s jurisdiction, where officers were investigating a strong-armed robbery.
Seminole Police requested assistance from BSO to locate and apprehend the suspect. BSO’s Burglary Apprehension Team (BAT) and Aviation Unit joined the search, tracking the suspect through North Lauderdale and into the City of Margate.
Deputies later encountered the suspect, identified as Carlos Robinson, 27, of Fort Lauderdale, in a residential neighborhood. Authorities say deputies issued commands for Robinson to exit the vehicle and attempted to de-escalate the situation using less-lethal methods, but Robinson did not comply.
Investigators say Robinson was armed and fired at deputies, striking a BSO North Lauderdale district deputy. The deputy’s ballistic vest absorbed the bullet, preventing life-threatening injuries.
Law enforcement returned fire, striking Robinson. The Margate Police Department SWAT team then moved in and took Robinson into custody. First responders rendered immediate medical aid at the scene.
Both Robinson and the injured deputy were transported to the hospital. The deputy was treated and released. Robinson remains hospitalized. Authorities confirmed that no other deputies or residents were injured.
Robinson faces multiple charges, including attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, shooting into an occupied dwelling, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and resisting arrest with violence. Investigators also confirmed Robinson has an active warrant out of Palm Beach County.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is investigating the deputy-involved shooting. BSO’s Homicide and Crime Scene units are investigating the circumstances that led to the shooting, while BSO’s Internal Affairs Unit is conducting an administrative review.
The six deputies who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative assignment, standard procedure following an officer-involved shooting.
Authorities said additional details regarding the robbery that initiated the incident should be requested from the Seminole Police Department.
