Quarantine Reads
For our times, now – awareness, Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates
If you are looking for a book to raise your level of awareness, Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates is a must-read. Distinguished by the flow and format in letters from a father to a son, delving into struggles, individuality, sacrifices, and development of emotional intelligence, this book engages the reader to think about their thinking.
“But race is the child of racism, not the father. And the process of naming the people has never been a matter of genealogy, so much as a hierarchy.”
As Toni Morrison declares, this book “is required reading.” I could not agree more. It will trigger your own memories, patterns, and the realization that we are not very different if you are willing to learn about another’s’ perspective.
The stories woven within them are compelling, real, and sometimes gut-wrenching. Be willing to read this with an open mind and heart.
Heartbreaking , The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison
Anything by Toni Morrison, the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1993, possesses built-in credentials and her work, The Bluest Eye is no different. Filled with painful humiliations, this work is beautifully written.
Her descriptions and use of raw emotion to trigger a response are at times difficult to read. Trigger alert: Be prepared for topics including rape, incest, and exile. The story is set in the 1940s and follows a poor Black family experience with hate, love, redemption, brutality until its heartbreaking and touching end.
With valuable lessons, this book is a must-read with spanning darkness, power, light, and poetic reality all at once. Crying is not out of the question, and potentially healing as privilege is pulled to pieces and old beliefs are undone. The book could not be put down.
