A growing disagreement between Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony and the Broward County Commission is raising questions about government accountability, public safety funding, and how county leaders will move forward as a state investigation continues.
On October 5, 2026, Sheriff Tony announced that he would suspend discretionary budget negotiations with county commissioners, citing an ongoing investigation by the Florida Office of Statewide Prosecution. The investigation involves members of the County Commission and other county officials, creating additional tension between two of Broward County’s most influential public institutions.
The investigation became public in September after all nine county commissioners and several senior officials received subpoenas. The investigation is related to county discussions about potentially taking over Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Port Everglades public safety operations currently handled by the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
While the investigation continues, Tony has emphasized that his decision is not a judgment about anyone’s guilt or innocence. In an official statement released by the Broward Sheriff’s Office, he explained that the agency would continue meeting its legal budget responsibilities and providing essential public safety services throughout Broward County.

However, county commissioners have expressed frustration with the sheriff’s decision. Commissioners have also denied any wrongdoing in connection with the ongoing state investigation. Broward County Mayor Mark Bogen and other commissioners have questioned the Sheriff’s Office’s spending and called for greater financial transparency. The disagreement intensified on October 6 when commissioners voted to indefinitely postpone consideration of an additional $5.8 million requested by the Sheriff’s Office for dispatch services.
For Broward County residents, the situation goes beyond a disagreement between elected officials. Budget decisions help determine how public resources are managed, how emergency services are supported, and how local government responds to the needs of its communities.
The ongoing investigation also highlights the importance of transparency and public trust. For now, essential public safety services are expected to continue.
Villij News will continue monitoring the situation and provide updates as Broward County leaders address the investigation, budget concerns, and the future of public safety operations.
