Magic, Mirth, And Mortality: Musings on Black Motherhood is a thought-provoking exhibition at the Young at Art Museum, 800 W. Broward Blvd, Plantation, inside of the Broward Mall. The collection of work is inspired by the lived experiences of BIPOC artists and celebrates the resilience of Black mothers through visual and literary art. The exhibit is on display until June 9, 2024.

The exhibition was inspired by Shawana Brooks, a wife, mother, writer and curator, and her journey with her premature son. Her experience is similiar to the experience of other Black mothers and artists that are part of the collection – Cheryl McCain, Marsha Hatcher, Tatiana Kitchen and Shawna Moulton of Davie.

“This combination of memoir, visual art, and data is intended to create a space for healing, awareness building, sharing, and collective action,” according to the YellowHouse website. There is a unique installation called the “Womb Room,” which gives visitors an immersive experience inside of a mother’s womb. Throughout the exhibit, you will also see statistics discussing higher infant and maternal mortality rates for BIPOC mothers, healthcare and institutional disparities and biases. Musuem admission is $12 for attendees ages 2 and up. Get a sneak peak of the virtual exhibit here, A Yellow House Virtual Exhibit (yellowhouseart.org).
